Do you want understand the building blocks of great comedy? Do you want to learn the secrets behind making someone laugh? Do you want to be part of a fun group which creates original work? If you answered “yes” then this course is for you!

We will help people interested in creating comedy begin to learn how to develop their ideas alongside fun people, gaining a greater understanding of how comedy works and a confidence to pursue comedic performance. We will explore different styles of comedy, devise in each style, and ultimately work towards participants finding their own niche in comedy. 

This course will look at laughter and it's origins in clowning and commedia dell'arte (comedy of art) street performance. Participants will delve into the basics of how to create humour onstage, and begin to work out what makes someone laugh. We will look at modern and classic comedies, and analyse why we find them funny, however this course will primarily be incredibly practical. We will learn to become clowns ourselves and explore the known relationship between laughter and wellbeing. Can a smile really go a long way? And what makes one performance more universally amusing than another? Or, is universal humour really even possible at all? 

Those involved in this course will learn what makes themselves laugh and how they can utilise their own sense of humour to become comedic practitioners. Comedy is renowned for its positive affect on mental health, and this communal way of working with devised comedy will improve wellbeing through laughter, helping participants grow in confidence!!

This masterclass is for those who will be in Year 10 and year 11 in September 2019. There will be two different classes taking place on 23/07/2019


First class : 10:00 - 13:00 Young people in years 10-11

Second class : 13:30 - 16:30 Young people in years 12-13
